First week in Australia

Location: Gold Coast
Dates: 7 May 2018 - 12 May 2018

Before we embarked on our International Practicum in Brisbane, we stayed in Gold Coast for a week and had so much fun there! We went to the highly raved theme parks - Dreamworld and Movie World. The rides were amazing!!! (but some rides were closed on the day we went 😟) For non-thrill seekers, you can check out the Corroboree and Tiger Island in Dreamworld to see animals (tree kangaroos, koalas, tigers, dingos & more!) and learn about the aboriginal culture. You can also take photos with walking mascots like Po the Kungfu Panda!

FOR THRILL SEEKERS!
Recommended rides at Dreamworld:
- The Giant Drop
- Tower of Terror
- WipeOut
- Pandamonium
Recommended rides at Movie World:
- DC Rivals Hypercoaster
- Green Lantern Coaster
- Arkham Asylum Coaster
- Batwing Spaceshot
- Doomsday Destroyer

At Movie World, do catch the Street Star Parade where you can see Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Looney Tunes characters, Scooby Doo and Shaggy, and many more! 😍We also recommend Ben & Jerry's and the Peanut butter Shake, they are really good!

We also took long walks along the beaches of the Gold Coast. The waters looked blue and inviting, and the sand was smooth. The view at the beaches were simply spectacular. Not only that, it was the perfect place to take lots of photos! We had lots of fun channelling our inner “models”.

We did quite a bit of sightseeing, shopping and playing as well in Gold Coast.

We went to Skypoint Observation Deck in Surfers Paradise which gave us 360 degree panoramic views that stretch from the surf to the hinterland and beyond. We didn't know that our Dreamworld tickets also came with complimentary tickets to the Skypoint, so we revisited it again, this time at night! The view was also spectacular.

We frequented Cavill Avenue where most of the activity is. There were a lot of shops that sells a wide variety of foods such as churros, pancakes and even Asian food if you are craving for it. We also recommend Timezone for arcade lovers. Another place for shopping is the Pacific Fair shopping centre (Broadbeach), a mega mall with lots of different shops, but a tad on the higher end - imagine ION and Takashimaya in Singapore.

Recommended food:
- Brooklyn Depot (awesome burgers!)
- San Churro Chocolateria
- Pancakes on the rocks
- Niche Espresso (Miami)
- Miami Marketta

Food in Gold Coast are slightly more pricey, but you can get really good food and the portions are rather big too so it's good for sharing! At San Churro, we tried Double Dough and The Original Churros Snack Pack. But there were also other droolworthy items on the menu that you could try out!

As we stayed in Miami, we visited Miami Marketta. Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night, Miami Marketta comes alive with street food from all round the world. Apart from the outdoor dining experience, there were also live band performances at the main stage. You can think of the place somewhat like Timbre+ in Singapore, with lots of fairy lights. Some of the food we tried include pizza, gnocchi, hot dogs, super tender calamari rings, teppanyaki, sweet potato fries and kombucha. Verdict: Awesome!

One week passed by so fast and in no time, we found ourselves heading towards Brisbane, where our IP is going to be at. Luckily, it was easy getting around. There is a direct train that connects Gold Coast to Brisbane (Check out https://translink.com.au/plan-your-journey to know how to connect to Brisbane if you are heading from Gold Coast), which made travelling easy!
Stay tuned for more of our adventures in Brisbane city!

Orientation at Griffith University

Date: 15 - 16 May 2018 Before we begin our IP, we had to go for an orientation programme at Griffith University, Mt Gravatt Campus. Luckily, the Translink website ( https://translink.com.au/plan-your-journey ) was really easy to navigate and we managed to find the right bus stop and the right bus to get on. The Translink website helps us to find the fastest way to get our destination depending on the time that we are living and it is usually accurate. It is also in our favour that the bus stops are close to our accommodation! A few stops later, we safely arrived at Mt Gravatt campus! We then met Dr Kay Hartwig, our Australian supervising professor, who gave us a quick tour of the campus. The campus was splendid (so was the Nathan campus, which we went later in the afternoon). Dr Kay explained that we had to prepare a practicum file that we need to bring to school. This is a similar practice back in Singapore. Dr Kay ran through the necessary documents that we need for practicum, ...

Cooking in Brisbane

It is a tad expensive to be constantly eating out. The shops tend to close rather early especially the weekends and the closing hours are not consistent throughout the whole week. Thus, it is always a good option to cook. We had lots of fun at the supermarket, discussing about the dishes that we want to eat and thinking of what ingredients to get. We felt like a family thinking about the week’s worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are several supermarkets that we can shop from. Coles and Aldi sells food items at relatively cheap prices, so we recommend getting your stuff from there. For us, the closest was Coles at Queen Street while Aldi was located at the West End, which needs a bus ride. ( Note: If you are going to buy groceries from Aldi, do remember to bring your own bags. They do not provide plastic bags!) If you ever feel slightly lazy or need your meat fix, we highly recommend getting the Roast Chicken from Woolworths for dinner. It costs $9 for the whole chicken! ...
